Call for paper and panel proposals, AAS-in-Asia Annual Meeting 2020

Sponsor: Society for Hong Kong Studies
Event: AAS-in-Asia Annual Meeting
Dates: June 22-24, 2020
Location: Hong Kong SAR

We are pleased to invite colleagues interested in Hong Kong studies to submit panel proposals to be included in the program of the Association for Asian Studies Annual Meeting to be held in Hong Kong in 2020. An affiliate of AAS, the SHKS has the privilege of sponsoring three organized panels each year. As the world’s largest academic association for Asian Studies, AAS annual meetings offer an unparalleled international forum for showcasing Hong Kong studies, fostering interdisciplinary dialogues and professional networks. SHKS will organize a roundtable on social protests in Hong Kong. The other two panels are open for any theme related to Hong Kong, including but not limited to:

  • Hong Kong social and economic history
  • literature, cinema, and the arts
  • political institutions, elections, governance
  • social movements and civil society
  • law, society, and criminal justice
  • global city, popular culture, urban development, environment
  • inequality, poverty, gender, class, ethnicity and race, sexuality
  • transnational, regional, cross-border dynamics, migration
  • economic development
  • demography and family

Each panel proposal should include four paper presentations with a session chair and/or discussant to facilitate a discussion of the papers presented. All sessions will be 1 hour and 45 minutes in length. We look for panel proposals that have a coherent theme connecting the papers. Per AAS guidelines, organizers should strive for a diverse and inclusive panel when assembling participants. Gender diversity, institutional diversity, and a mix of professional seniority (e.g. graduate students, junior and senior academics) are particularly welcome.

Each panel proposal should consist of

  • panel abstract (250 words maximum)
  • individual paper abstracts (4 papers, each of 250 words maximum)
  • name of chairperson
  • name of discussant

Deadline: 15 October 2019

SHKS Executive Committee will select three organized panels, provide feedback and assist with submission to the AAS program committee.
