Work-in-Progress Workshop in Hong Kong Studies

This workshop invites submissions of abstracts for papers, articles, chapters, and dissertations in progress in the field of Hong Kong studies. It aims to provide a platform for graduate students and faculty to present their ongoing work, receive feedback, and refine their research. The workshop also serves as a forum for scholars interested in Hong Kong studies to learn about and discuss the latest scholarship in the field. It encourages intellectual and academic exchanges among practitioners, with a focus on engaging graduate students in the study of Hong Kong.

The sustainability of Hong Kong Studies is contingent upon the steadfast commitment and tireless efforts of the next generation of scholars. Discovering Hong Kong’s Country Parks
Talk and Waste Audit Training for Students, Scholars, and Nature Enthusiasts

“Discovering Hong Kong’s Country Parks: Talk and Waste Audit Training for Students, Scholars, and Nature Enthusiasts,” presented by the Society for Hong Kong Studies in collaboration with Parks and Trails. Taking place in February and March, this series offers a unique opportunity to explore the captivating beauty of Hong Kong’s country parks while gaining valuable knowledge and skills.

There are engaging talks by experts, who will delve into the rich ecological and cultural significance of these pristine landscapes. Introduction to Information Security Workshop for scholars
學者資訊安全基礎工作坊

是次工作坊為初階資訊安全工作坊,目標是為不熟悉資訊安全的入門學者及研究員介紹資訊安全的基本概念及初階工具,亦會即場與大家一起嘗試使用介紹的工具和設定。

是次涵蓋的內容包括:密碼管理、雙重認證(2FA)、安全通訊平台(聊天軟件、電郵、視像會議平台)、VPN、線上及線下檔案保存、檔案元數據 (metadata)管理、基礎裝置設定等。亦歡迎參加者透過工作坊前問卷提出其他感興趣的題目。

Fact-checking Workshop #「事實查核在香港」工作坊

Society for Hong Kong Studies 與 Factcheck Lab 事實查核實驗室共同舉辦:

  1. 事實查核簡介︰甚麼是事實查核?外部查核與內部查核的分別/與記者工作的異同
  2. 查核機構及其運作︰香港的查核機構/事實查核的國際認證/Meta第三方事實查核機制。
  3. 事實查核員的前線觀察:由疫情爆發至社會復元,錯誤資訊的題材如何轉向?歷史悠久的登月陰謀論來到香港如何在地化?
  4. 分享事實查核技巧,配合課堂實戰練習,建議參加者攜帶電腦出席。

“Immigration Detention and Vulnerable Migrants in Hong Kong” Research Methodology Sharing Series

We are excited to have the Faculty of Law, Chinese University of Hong Kong’s research team of the “Immigration Detention and Vulnerable Migrants in Hong Kong” Project to share about their research journey in a Research Methodology Sharing Series.

1️⃣ Data on Detention: How to obtain official data under the Code of Access to Information

This workshop explores how to obtain and incorporate hard-to-access official data into qualitative research on law, governance, and public policy in Hong Kong. We discussed the landscape of open government data and our experience as researchers on the three-year RGC-funded project “Immigration Detention and Vulnerable Migrants in Hong Kong” in the Faculty of Law at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

2️⃣ ‘Do no Harm’: Research with Vulnerable Groups in Practice

In this talk, CUHK Law shared their practices in minimising potential risks to interviewees, interpreters and researchers. They shared the measures they put in place to protect the mental health of interviewees. They also discussed the training the research team undertook on interviewing vulnerable individuals, and the trainings they delivered for interpreters on interpreters’ ethics and secondary trauma. Finally, they touched on the measures they took to ensure researchers maintained healthy boundaries when facing deeply affecting subject matter.

Research ethics workshop

3️⃣ A Hub that can never be a Home: Low-income Migrants and Crimmigration in Hong Kong

The talk highlighted how the immigration regime in Hong Kong renders low-income migrants vulnerable to exclusion, detention, and removal from the city.
