HONG KONG HISTORY DAY 2024

REDISCOVERING HONG KONG’S PAST: RECENT WRITINGS ON HONG KONG HISTORY PANEL

For the 2024 edition of the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, the Society for Hong Kong Studies is collaborating with the Festival committee to curate a panel specifically focused on recent writings on Hong Kong history. Join esteemed scholars Carmen Tsui, John Wong, and Chi Man Kwong as they delve into the intricate realm of Everyday Architecture in Context: Public Markets in Hong Kong (1842–1981), soar through the skies with Hong Kong Takes Flight: Commercial Aviation and the Making of a Global Hub, 1930s-1998, and share the inspiring stories of Hongkongers in the British Armed Forces, 1860-1997. Moderated by renowned historian Christopher Munn.
Panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Christopher Munn, Honorary Associate Professors, Department of History, The University of Hong Kong.

These panels will cover topics such as the challenges and achievements of archiving Hong Kong’s history, the study of music, cinema, and entertainment in Hong Kong’s past, the sharing of teaching experiences in Hong Kong history education, and a revisiting of the “Golden Era” of the 1970s through scholarly writing. The event aims to provide a platform for academic discussions and insights into various aspects of Hong Kong’s history.

DIGITAL RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM
This symposium brings together researchers who have been engaging in the study of digital media and politics in Hong Kong, China, and the East Asian region to introduce their research projects and share their research findings. The aim is to showcase how a variety of available methodological approaches – ranging from conventional surveys to various “digital methods” – can be employed to address issues of theoretical and empirical significance. The symposium shall also provide a platform for interested academics and students to discuss the potential and possible caveats in the study of digital media and politics.
CHINA-US RELATIONS DURING TRADE WAR FORUM
Building on the popularity of the first forum in January 2018, this second installment of what will become an annual event featured three speakers – Tak-wing Ngo, Ray Yep and Ho-fung Hung — on Hong Kong-China relation in the context of the ongoing trade war between China and the US. About 50 scholars and students attended the lively discussion.
